From scenic trains offering stunning views, to luxurious carriages that create an opulent experience, there are many to choose from. Here are a few of my favorites:

The Glacier Express, Switzerland

ROUTE: The Glacier Express travels through the heart of the Swiss Alps, connecting the mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. The journey covers approximately 291 kilometers (181 miles) and passes through stunning alpine scenery, including deep valleys, towering peaks, and charming mountain villages. The whole journey takes approximately 7.5 hour each way.

The Flåm Railway, Norway

ROUTE: The Flåm Railway is a 20.2-kilometer (12.6-mile) long railway line that runs between the village of Flåm in Aurland municipality and the mountain station of Myrdal on the Bergen Line. The journey takes approximately one hour each way and passes through some of Norway’s most stunning landscapes.

The Bernina Express, Switzerland and Italy

ROUTE: The Bernina Express route covers approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) and crosses the Bernina Pass, reaching an altitude of 2,253 meters (7,392 feet) above sea level. The journey takes passengers through picturesque valleys, past glaciers, and across dizzying viaducts.

The West Highland Line, Scotland

ROUTE: The West Highland Line runs from Glasgow to Mallaig, passing through some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery. The journey covers approximately 264 kilometers (164 miles) and takes around 5 hours to complete. The line connects to other scenic routes, such as the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig and the West Highland Line extension to Oban.

The villages, listed from north to south, are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The train service operates frequently throughout the day, making it easy for visitors to explore each village at their own pace.
