The London Restaurants You Can’t Miss
It seems London’s culinary scene grows each day with new restaurants popping up all the time. In a bustling city with as many cuisine options as London features, it can be difficult to decide where to dine. The United Kingdom’s “reservation” culture doesn’t make it easy, with most dining facilities requiring a reservation days in advance.
My five years living in England brought me to London many times, and each time I had the same goal- try out a new restaurant. Here is a list of my favorites that I wouldn’t hesitate to return to next time I’m in the city!
1. Dishoom, $$
If you’re a fan of Bombay cuisine, there’s no doubt that you are familiar with this institute. With 7 locations scattered about the city, you’re always near one. Dishoom is an ode to the old Iranian cafes of Bombay. With dishes like their famous gunpowder potatoes, a variety of curries, and small plates, there is something for everyone on Dishoom’s extensive menu. Rumor has it that their brunch is also amazing!
Dishoom is mostly a walk-in cafe with reservations taken for daytime dining. After 6pm, they only accept reservations for groups of 6 or more. Reservations can be made here: https://www.dishoom.com/reservations/
2. Farzi Cafe, $$$
Farzi cafe calls themselves “Modern Indian Cuisine” which celebrates innovation and authenticity, and I couldn’t agree more. This Michelin Guide-recognized restaurant offers a unique twist on classic Indian dishes in a chic atmosphere. The trendy eatery has a gorgeous bar with an array of Indian spirits to try.
Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made here: https://farzilondon.com/reservations
3. SMOKESTAK, $$$
If you’re a fan of smoked meats, this is the place for you. While the menu is limited, everything is exceptionally prepared and cooked to order. The rustic vibe of the facility adds to the aesthetic while the aromas of smoked meat fill the air. It’s a true experience!
The restaurant features a terrace and indoor seating. Walk-ins are welcome, but I recommend a booking: https://www.smokestak.co.uk/book
4. Pizza Pilgrims, $$
With 12 locations scattered about London, Pizza Pilgrims is a great place for a quick slice. My favorite thing here are the dipping sauces that pair perfectly with their smoked mozzarella bites and artichoke fritti. Their “In crust we trust” motto hits home! It’s a fun atmosphere with delicious pizzas.
While some locations are walk-in only, some allow bookings. Check them out here: https://www.pizzapilgrims.co.uk/
5. East Street by Tampopo Fitzrovia, $$
A restaurant I stumped upon is now a new favorite! East Street by Tampopo Fitzrovia is a Pan-Asian dinner with all the classics. The colorful restaurant has an array of starters, mains, and cocktails sure to delight. My favorite is their Pad Thai!
Bookings are definitely recommended for dinner, but you may be able to walk in at lunch: https://tampopo.co.uk/fitzrovia/
6. Patty & Bun, $$
A burger joint? You guessed it… There are several Patty & Bun locations in the city and they are great for a quick bite. These are definitely some of the best burgers I’ve had in London. Patty & Bun has a playful menu with beef, chicken, and vegetarian options.
Patty & Bun is a walk-in-only kind of place, but you can view their menu and read about their establishment here: https://www.pattyandbun.co.uk/
7. The Ivy, $$$
Looking for a modern British cuisine option? The Ivy has lots of options around the city with each one decorated beautifully.
Reservations are strongly recommended for all locations: https://the-ivy.co.uk/
8. Markets
The various markets of London are great places to try various food trucks and unique bites. Some of my favorite markets for snacks and meals are Borough Market, Camden Market, and Spitalfields Market.
London’s culinary scene features flavors from all over the world. No matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find it in this bustling city. And what better way to experience it than with an adventure to London.
