What is Venice’s Access Fee & What Does It Mean For Visitors?

In an effort to combat over-tourism and discourage crowds on busy days, Venice has recently enacted an access-fee system for day-trippers. The access fee system will be permanently effective in 2025, but there are days it is being “practiced” in 2024. The test days are peak days in April, May, June & July.
April 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 & 30
May 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 & 26
June 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 & 30
July 6, 7, 13 & 14
The fee is paid via Venice’s official website: https://cda.ve.it/en/
The fee is 5 EUROS per person (less than $6). Special exemptions apply for some visitors.
I’m staying overnight. Do I need to pay?
If you’re staying overnight on the island, you do not need to pay the day-tripper fee. But you DO need to complete the form at the official website in order to receive your QR code. By visiting the official website, https://cda.ve.it/en/, you will be able to request an “Exemption” to the fee with a bit of information about your overnight stay. You will, however, pay the city tax to your hotel.
Be sure to keep up with your documentation, as you may be asked for it by an inspector.
What happens if I don’t pay?
Venice has inspectors randomly checking guests in the city. If you don’t have your QR code available to display, you will be fined. These stewards will also be monitoring entry points (train stations, bus stations, etc.).
How Do I Pay The Fee?
To pay the fee, simply visit the official website for the purpose: https://cda.ve.it/en/
You will select “Payment of the Fee” and select your date of visit. Once your transaction is complete, you must keep up with your generated QR code as this is proof of having paid the fee.
The City of Venice notes that these 2024 days are “experimental” but are being enforced. From the 2024 experimental days, changes may be made to how the fee is enforced going forward. It is important to check all official entry information before visiting Venice in the event of changes.
